Project Description:

Onam is the biggest and the most important festival of the state of Kerala, and is its national festival since 1961. It is a harvest festival and is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm all over the state by people of all communities. According to a popular legend, the festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam. Onam is celebrated in the beginning of the month of Chingam, the first month of the Malayalam Calendar (Kollavarsham). This corresponds with the month of August to September according to the Gregorian Calendar. The carnival of Onam lasts from four to ten days. First day, Atham and tenth day, Thiruonam are most important of all. Thanks The story is told that during the reign of Mahabali, the mighty king, Mahabali story was popularised in ancient India in the time of Kautalyan (AD-4th century) he quated the name of king Mahabali. He felled down by his unbrackable donation(daanam)mind.king Mahabali did donate (Daanam) more and more land to Brahmana,The cheatting avathar name Vamana ( from)Vishnu. Avathar Vamana begged three feet Land to King Mahabali for sanyasa.Mahabali allowed to donate the land.But this time Vamana grew and became the Tallest man.Vamana's first feet coverd Earth, Second feet coverd sky, atlast Vamana put his feet on King Mahabali 's Head.The people cried as their innesent and loveable king failed by Vishnu's (Vamana), trick. The all indiginions Indian people cried and brocked. The common people of india in various regions organised like the memorial programmes. Ten days on each and every years the Indian common peoples organised the memorial programes, totaly it developed like the onam festival. King Mahabali's memmory began like onam festival in kerala. Tamil Samgam Literature expressed Onam festival in old Tamil Dravidian Land.the oldest malayalam folk song expressed very froot fully , and loveable rooling in kerala. "Maveli Nadu vanidum kaalam, Maanushar Ellarum Onnapole" (Maveli's rooling time all people lived like equality) This folk song is the symbol of equality of old Indian people. But Vishnu and his Avathar Vamana Brocked this equality and started Varnasrama Darma System (castism) in India. Even then Kerala people witnessed its golden era. But Everybody in the state was happy and prosperous and king was highly regarded by his subjects. Another story created by high caste people ,God's was jealous about the good deed done by him. Gods brought an end to his reign as they felt challenged by Mahabali's growing popularity. However, for all the good deed done by Mahabali, God granted him a boon that he could annually visit his people with whom he was so attached. It is this annual visit of Mahabali that is celebrated as Onam.
